{"id":323,"date":"2021-02-04T15:41:06","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T15:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ni.cmu.edu\/computing\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=323"},"modified":"2021-02-05T00:41:24","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T00:41:24","slug":"changing-passwords-on-raptor-file-server","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/ni.cmu.edu\/computing\/knowledge-base\/changing-passwords-on-raptor-file-server\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing Passwords on Raptor File Server"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><u>How to change your Passwords on raptor.ni.cmu.edu<\/u><\/h3>\n<h4>*** USE STRONG PASSWORDS FOR BOTH UNIX AND SAMBA ****<\/h4>\n<h6>Password strength enforcement:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>You will have 3 times to enter a right password before it will returning an error and you will have to start over.<\/li>\n<li>The minimum acceptable size for the new password is eight (8).<\/li>\n<li>Maximum three (3) characters should be similar to the characters in the previous password.<\/li>\n<li>At least one (1) lower case letters<\/li>\n<li>At least one (1) upper case letters<\/li>\n<li>At least one (1) digit.<\/li>\n<li>At least one (1) symbol such as @, #, ! $ % etc<\/li>\n<li>It will reject the password if contains the name of the user in either straight or reversed form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>To change your password you have to connect to the server through a secure ssh terminal program.<\/h6>\n<p><strong>UNIX Shell:<\/strong> ssh -Y &lt;userID&gt;@raptor.ni.cmu.edu<br \/>\n<strong>MacOS:<\/strong> Open a &#8220;Terminal&#8221; session and then use: ssh -Y &lt;userID&gt;@raptor.ni.cmu.edu<br \/>\n<strong>Window:<\/strong> Open a secure terminal session using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.putty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PuTTY<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/computing\/software\/all\/tectia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SSH Tectia &#8211; Terminal<\/a> or a similar application.<\/p>\n<h5>Here is an example of Harry (username harry) changing both his UNIX and SAMBA passwords.<\/h5>\n<h6>Herry logs into the server.:<\/h6>\n<p># ssh harry@ni.cmu.edu<br \/>\n(you may get a RSA key fingerprint message and an yes\/no question)<br \/>\nharry@ni.cmu.edu&#8217;s password:<\/p>\n<p>(some details of server will then print out before you receive your prompt)<\/p>\n<p>harry@raptor:~$<\/p>\n<h6>Example of changing UNIX Password:<\/h6>\n<p>harry@raptor:~$ passwd<br \/>\nChanging password for harry.<br \/>\nCurrent password: &lt;type or paste password here &#8211; no printout when typing&gt;<br \/>\nNew password: &lt;type or paste password here &#8211; no printout when typing&gt;<br \/>\nRetype new password:&lt;type or paste password here &#8211; no printout when typing&gt;<br \/>\npasswd: password updated successfully<br \/>\nharry@raptor:~$<\/p>\n<h6>Example of changing your SAMBA Password:<\/h6>\n<p>harry@raptor:~$ smbpasswd -U harry<br \/>\nOld SMB password:&lt;type or paste password here &#8211; no printout when typing&gt;<br \/>\nNew SMB password:&lt;type or paste password here &#8211; no printout when typing&gt;<br \/>\nRetype new SMB password:&lt;type or paste password here &#8211; no printout when typing&gt;<br \/>\n(long printout before receiving a line similar to the following)<br \/>\nPassword changed for user harry<br \/>\nharry@raptor:~$\u00a0 exit<br \/>\nlogout<br \/>\nConnection to raptor.ni.cmu.edu closed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to change your Passwords on raptor.ni.cmu.edu *** USE STRONG PASSWORDS FOR BOTH UNIX AND SAMBA **** Password strength enforcement: You will have 3 times to enter a right password before it will returning an error and you will have to start over.
