Printing – MI 115/116

The procedure for NI/CNBC printer problems is to inform NI Computing Administrator ( in person or via email) that the printer is not working. In turn, David will do his best to resolve the issue in a timely manner. If your work is so urgent that you can’t wait for him to resolve the issue, please use a different printer.

The CNBC has the following computers for the CNBC members in Mellon Institute.

  1. MI Room 115 – (Printer IP address: 128.2.244.33 ) Ricoh MP C3503 – Includes features such as color, duplex printing, stapling and collating. This unit also is the Department’s copier and scanner.
  2. MI Room 115 – (Printer IP address: 128.2.244.194 ) Brother HL-4570CDW – Includes features such as color, duplex printing
  3. MI Room 116 – (Printer IP address:128.2.245.96 ) Brother HL-L8350CDW – Includes features such as color, duplex printing

If you hare having difficulty connecting to a printer or your system cannot find an appropriate driver, the following links will direct you to the drivers for the CNBC printers:

Below are instructions on configuring the printers on your computer (Windows/MacOS).

These Instructions are general instructions to assist in helping you connect to printers. They do not address every potential setup case for all operating systems and printers. If you are having difficulty connecting to a printer, please contact David for assistance.

Install a network printer on Windows 7

If you’re trying to add a network printer, you’ll want to refer to the list above for the name, location and ip address of the printer.

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
  2. Click Add a printer.
  3. In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.
  4. In the list of available printers, select the one you want to use, and then click Next. (If your computer is connected to a network, only printers listed in Active Directory for your domain are displayed in the list.)
  5. If prompted, install the printer driver on your computer by clicking Install driver. If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  6. Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click Finish.

You can confirm the printer is working by printing a test page. To print a test page:

  1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click a printer, and then click Printer properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Print Test Page.

Cannot find the printer on the list of available printers?

  1. Perform the following:
    • Select the option Add a printer using a TCP/IP address, and then click on the Next button.
    • Enter the IP address in the IP address text area. (As you type the address, Windows also adds the address automatically to the Port name text area, as shown in the example below.)
    • Install the driver for your printer by selecting the printer’s manufacturer from the Manufacturer and then the model number. (If the model number of your printer isn’t listed, click on the Windows Update button to list additional printer models.) Click on the Next button.
  2. Enter a descriptive name for your printer in the Printer name text area or leave the name that is already filled in, then click on the Next button. Note: You can change the printer name at any time.
  3. In the next window, make sure the option Do not share this printer is selected, and then click on the Next button. If the printer was added successfully, you should see the following window:
  4. In the message window shown in step 7, click on the Print a test page button if you want to print a test page to verify you can print with the printer, and then click on the Finish button.
  5. You can view the new printer listing by clicking again on the Start button, and then clicking again on Devices and Printers. You should see the entry for your printer.

Connect to a network printer on Mac OS

  1. From the Apple menu choose System Preferences.
  2. From the View menu choose Printers & Scanners.
  3. If the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the System Preferences window is locked, click it and enter an administrator name and password to unlock it.
  4. Click the Add printer (+) icon at the bottom of the Printers pane to open the Add Printer window.
  5. If the printer appears when the Default icon is selected, select it and skip to step 8.
  6. If the printer does not appear with the Default icon selected, click the IP button on the toolbar.
  7. IP printers have three printing protocols to choose from. Select the appropriate option for your printer. Note: If you pick a protocol other than HP Jetdirect, you may have to manually select the appropriate PPD and installable options.
    • HP Jetdirect – Socket: Some HP and other printer manufacturers use this protocol.
    • Internet Printing Protocol – IPP: Modern printers and printer servers use this protocol.
    • Line Printer Daemon – LPD: Earlier printers and print servers may use this protocol.
  8. Click the Address field and enter the IP address of your printer. When your Mac communicates with your IP-capable printer the message “Valid and complete address” appears below the Address field. If the message “Invalid or incomplete address” appears, make sure the IP address is properly entered and that it is the IP address configured on the printer. Next, your Mac establishes an IP connection to your printer and displays “Gathering printer information…”. It then selects the associated printer driver in the Print Using menu. If your Mac is able to communicate with the printer, but it is not able to automatically determine the print driver needed, choose the option “Select Printer Software…” from the Print Using pop-up menu in the Add Printer window. Enter your printer model in the search field to quickly find the appropriate driver. If the model of printer is not listed, but your printer is a PostScript printer or PCL Laser printer, try the “Generic PostScript ” or “PCL Laser printer” driver options. Generic printer drivers may not let you access all the features of your printer.
  9. Once your Mac finishes communicating with the printer, click Add to create your printer queue.

Problem Solving:

  • If all of the printer options are not available, you should verify that you have the updated drive.  Download the printer driver from Ricoh’s website: http://support.ricoh.com/bb/html/dr_ut_e/re2/model/mpc3003/mpc3003.htm?lang=en
  • Confirm that you have enabled the Finisher (staple, 2 or 3 hole punch) on the Ricoh printer:

    MacOS Users:

    System Preferences->Printers & Scanners Select the Ricoh printer on left side of window. Once selected select Options & Supplies on right side of window Another window will appear. Select the Options tab. Make sure that “Tray 3 (LCT)” is selected under “Option Tray:” Make sure that “Finisher SR3140” is selected under “Finisher:”
