Apply for a Cluster User Account

Lab members of labs which pay for Cluster Access and Support are qualified to use the Neuroscience Institute/CNBC Cluster.

In order to log onto the cluster, each user must have a CMU Andrew Username and their personal “SCS user account”. We DO NOT support multi-user accounts. We do setup UNIX groups for labs so they can  control permissions for their lab group and project members.

What should I do if I don’t have a CMU Andrew account?

If you don’t have a a CMU Andrew account, you must get one before you can proceed with applying for a cluster account. To determine if you qualify please email the following information to David Pane (dpane@andrew.cmu.edu) and copy your PI.

  1. Your full name:
  2. Home mailing address:
  3. Phone number:
  4. Email (non-CMU):

The process of cluster account creation.

Creating a cluster account is a two step process.

  1. After providing David with the information he requests below, he will send a request to the CMU School of Computer Science asking them to create a SCS account for you. However, if you know you already have an active SCS account, let David know so he can skip this step.  David will be the sponsor for new and inactive user accounts.  Once the account has been created, SCS will contact user by email with instructions on how to set their password. The SCS user account credentials (i.e.The user’s SCS Kerberos username and password) will be used to authenticate onto your cluster cluster.  Please note that typically your cluster account will still need to be created when SCS notifies you about your SCS account being created.
  2. After the SCS account has been created, the SCS Cluster UNIX team will receive notification to create your account on the cluster. They will create the appropriate directories and add you to the lab UNIX group(s) that are appropriate with your lab affiliation. David will email you once he is notified your cluster  account has been created.
