Raptor File Server Description

The server is a Dell PowerEdge R740XD and is configured with one Intel Xeon Silver 4214 2.2G processor and 72GB RAM. It is running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS operating system. There is a SAS 12Gbps HBA External Controller that is used to attach to a JBOD-S43 Single Expander.  Twenty-four slots of the 43 bays are filled with 8.0TB SAS 3.0 12.0Gb/s 7200RPM – 3.5″ – Ultrastar DC HC320 (512e) ( Enterprise Level) hard drives.

Using ZFS, the drives in JBOD are configured as two 11 disk raidz2 (fault tolerance of 2 drives) sets stripped together as one volume with two hot spares.  The majority of this volume is used for the users’ home directories.  A small portion of the space is used for data that is exported to our web servers using NFS.  This enables our labs and users to easily present online content.

In addition to the RAID redundancy, ZFS is configured to take hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly snapshots.  We also have a backup server that is configured to replicate the Raptor’s ZFS volume for protection against possible catastrophic loss.

Raptor File Server is located in the machine room in Mellon Institute.

We support connecting to the server through ssh/sftp and SMB/CIFS protocol.  Connections using SMB/CIFS protocol is limited to machines on the Carnegie Mellon University network.
